When a local supplier beats a national one, and when it does not

A practical way to decide, sector by sector, rather than assuming local is always better or always worse.

The Guide exists to recommend independent West Yorkshire businesses, so it would be convenient to argue that local is always the right answer. It is not, and pretending otherwise would make every other recommendation here less worth reading.

Where local usually wins

Anything that requires someone physically present, quickly: trades, facilities, IT support with a hardware element, commercial cleaning. Response time is a real service quality and proximity buys it.

Anything where your account size determines the attention you get. A £2,000-a-month retainer is a meaningful client to a ten-person Halifax agency and a rounding error to a large national one. The work is often done by more senior people for less money simply because of where you sit in their client list.

Anything where local knowledge is the service: planning and conservation consent, local authority relationships, knowing which building inspector will object to what.

Where national or specialist usually wins

Deep specialism at scale. Complex corporate transactions, specialist tax, regulated financial advice, technical work in a narrow niche. Bench depth cannot be improvised, and a firm that does one unusual thing fifty times a year will beat one doing it twice.

Anything requiring 24/7 coverage with guaranteed response across multiple sites, where a small firm simply cannot staff it.

Anything where the supplier’s own scale gets you better terms — large media buying, volume purchasing, insurance schemes.

The test that usually settles it

Ask how many times the supplier has done exactly your job in the last year. Not similar work, not adjacent work: yours. If the local firm has done it twelve times and the national has done it three hundred, the national probably wins on quality but you will pay for it and wait longer. If the local firm has done it twelve times and the national has done it four, use the local firm.
